House History & Gallery

In the 19teens the Craftsman style of architecture was just becoming popular. Its relative simplicity and clean lines was a direct reaction against the ostentation of the Victorian styles that had been all the rage. In 1917, Guy P. Greenwald, the Secretary Treasurer of the Leo Greenwald Vinegar Company had a lovely craftsman style home built on Ashland Avenue, one of the most popular residential neighborhoods in the city. The house was a reflection of Greenwald’s success and the position he occupied in the business and social life of the booming city.

Unfortunately for Greenwald, by 1925 his vinegar company had folded and Greenwald sold his home on Ashland Ave. and moved his family to Los Angeles. The home was purchased by George W. Spengler, a leading pharmacist in the city who operated Spengler’s Pharmacy at 702 Francis. George was a first generation American, his parents had emigrated from Germany. Mr. Spengler and his family lived in and treasured their home for more than 30 years.
