The Jennings/Comstock House sits majestically atop a bluff overlooking the mighty Missouri River with a grand view to the west into the state of Kansas, looking toward the horizon as the globe curves and the sunsets. Located in the historic city of St. Joseph, MO, the house is located at the Gateway to the West where people dreaming of better lives and untold wealth gathered to head to the gold fields.

The business community of St. Joseph recognized a great opportunity when it presented itself and vast fortunes were made providing for the westward travelers. One of those enterprising entrepreneurs was Joseph Jennings who accumulated his wealth in the wholesale grocery business. In 1856 he built an impressive home on what is now known as Robidoux Hill, an area that was fast becoming one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods conveniently located on the edge of the thriving commercial district. Though his house was one of the first on the hill, others soon followed and the neighborhood is characterized by the large number of impressive mansions that were constructed between 1856 and 1900.

The Jennings/Comstock House played a small, but important, role in the history of American literature. It was here that famed poet Eugene Field met and courted Julia Comstock, the younger sister of his college roommate. When the couple married in 1873 the wedding reception was held on the grounds of her parents’ house at 602 North 5th Street.

Since that happy day, the house has fallen on harder times but it is ready to embrace a new chapter in its story. For a creatively entrepreneurial person, the possibilities offered by the Jennings/Comstock House are nearly limitless. This could be returned to a single family home. It could be an Air B&B. How about museum and event space? Whatever your dream the Jennings/Comstock could be its home!

And there is help available! The property qualifies for a number of local, regional, and national grants and tax incentives.
