House History and Gallery

It is rumored that the oldest part of this house was built by Joseph Robidoux. However, there is no evidence to back that up (unless it is on the actual deed). In 1868, W. Angelo Powell, the most important architect in St. Joseph prior to E.J. Eckel, advertised that he made alterations to the house of Mayor J.M. Barrett at the corner of 5th and Robidoux. The Barretts lived in the home until the mid-1880s when it was sold to the prominent dry goods merchant John Wyatt Townsend. It was Townsend who added the front porch and a vestibule in 1889. From Townsend, the property passed to his daughter Sarah and her husband Lewis Motter Smith, who was president of the C.D. Smith Drug Co. It was the Smith’s who built the large barn/carriage house in 1907. In 1912, the property was purchased by W. True Davis, founder of Anchor Serum. The Davis family retained the property until 1975 when it was sold to Don Haage, who made it into apartments.
