House History & Gallery

When you build your dream home, why would you ever move? That certainly seems to have been the belief of Arthur and Anna Dill. The couple married at 8:00 in the morning on June 2, 1908 at St. Mary’s church in St. Joseph. Their reception was at her parents’ home at 2217 N. 2nd Street. For the first few years of their marriage, they lived at 2107 N. 2nd St., a house owned by Anna’s parents. But they worked hard – Arthur had a good job as a mailman – and saved their money. In 1908 they bought the lot for their own home at 2208 N. 2nd St., but it was another eight years before their home was complete.

Most likely it took that long because they didn’t scrimp on the amenities. Their new home had wonderful woodwork, charming built-ins, and a second floor sun porch. But, once their home was complete – the Dills never left.

Arthur was a much-respected postman who served as the president of the St. Joseph Postal Employee’s Credit Union. He died of cancer in 1945 and is buried at Mt. Olivet. After Arthur’s death, Anna continued to live in her lovely home until at least the mid-1960s.

Arthur and Anna’s home has been well-cared for and is ready to welcome a new family to love it and to make memories here.
