The lovely historic city of St. Joseph, MO has an unusually large stock of historic properties. Many of those vintage structures that are on the market are multi-family dwellings and this inventory includes historic buildings that were both built as housing for more than one family and large single-family houses that have been adapted. These run the gamut from Antebellum to Victorian to Mid-Century and have nearly every architectural style of those eras: Italianate, Queen Anne, Neo-Classical, Chateauesque, Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Richardson Romanesque, Greek Revival, Second Empire… The historic multi-family houses are of brick, wood, and stone construction. Many of these historic properties feature original windows, original woodwork often embellished with elaborate fretwork, stained glass and leaded glass windows, vintage kitchens and baths. A remarkable number have their original iron fences and carriage houses. Most of the old houses are located in one of our local historic districts or national historic districts and thus are eligible for tax incentives as well as grants.

John Lemon House

John died in the home in 1905, and his wife Annie remained there for a few years sharing the home with her son Hal Y. Lemon. By 1913, the house was an apartment building known as the Elwyn. It then became the Eagles Lodge and then the Moose Lodge. By the late 1930s it was apartments again, and remained so until the present. Learn more about this stunning historic house on the next page. Newburger Historic Duplex

514-516 N. 6th St.

This lovely Neo-Classical duplex was built around 1906 by the milliner Bernard Newburger who lived next door at 518 as an investment property. At various times in its history, 514 was further subdivided in to two units, but 516 seems to always have been single family. There was relatively frequent turn-over, especially in 514, but the tenants all worked (or had retired from) the various commercial and industrial enterprises that were making St. Joseph prosperous in the first half of the 20th century.

For the first decade or so of its history, both sides of the duplex tended to be rented to members of the vibrant Jewish commercial class, which isn’t surprising as that is the group that Bernard would have spent his time with.  Between 1912 and 1916, the young widow Florence Grinspan and her small daughter live in 514. Her husband Mark, a clothing merchant who had emigrated from Russia to escape the anti-Jewish pogroms, had died suddenly in 1912. Florence worked hard to keep his business going to provide for herself and her daughter. After Florence moved out, Leo N. Lowenberg, the manager of the Paris Hat shop, moved in with his wife Nannette and his daughter Nancy Lee… Learn more about this historic property on the following page. MLS #2156436

Askin/Ide Duplex

IMG_0112.JPG

527-529 N. 8th Street

This lovely brick duplex was built in 1863 by Mr. Askin (about whom we know nothing else) and has had very few external changes, aside from the addition of a small room on the back, since then. This makes this duplex one of the few properties in St. Joseph that date from the period of the Civil War. Restoration on this property has been done in such a way as to retain the appearance of the original features.

This duplex has strong ties to the Wyeth Hardware Co. Its first recorded resident, William W. Bernard (he lived in 529) worked for Wyeth for nearly 50 years as superintendant of the saddlery division. Mr. Bernard and his wife Ella lived in the duplex from about 1877 until her death in 1905. Jacob Newcomer, a buyer for the company, lived  in 527 from 1904 to 1906 when his place was taken by Walter S. Jasper who was a department Secretary for the Wyeth Company.

Ketcham-Wallace House

Ketcham-Orr ext2.jpg

603-605 N. 8th Street

The Ketcham-WallaceHouse at 603-605 N. 8th St. is one of those rare lucky houses that remained in the same family for generations. Built at the end of the 19th century by the estate of merchant Hilem Ketcham it passed to Hilem’s daughter and granddaughter in turn. Both women raised their families in the home and it was from this address that they played an important role in St. Joseph society over the decades. Originally built as a single-family structure, at some point in the early 20th century it was made in to a duplex to accommodate more than one part of the same family. For several decades two generations of physicians lived and worked from this house. In the late 20th century, the Ketcham-Wallace’s house luck continued as it was purchased by local preservation icon Barbara Ide and wonderfully restored.

The Ketcham-Wallace house is located in the wonderfully evocative Hall Street Historic District and counts as its neighbor some of the grandest houses in St. Joseph. This lovely house more than holds its own in such company and it is easy to imagine it in its role as a center of social life on North 8th Street where from the 1920s until the 1950s there always seemed to be a party going on. Burnstein Bakery Apartments

815-817 S. 8th Street

SOLD

Built before the turn of the century, the Burnstein Bakery Apartments are located in the heart of the most historic part of St. Joseph.

Initially, this structure was strictly residential with many fascinating characters making their home here. But as the neighborhood became home to a growing Eastern European Jewish community businesses began to spring up and the lower level was used as a storefront while families lived on the upper stories.

The current brick front of the lovely building was put on in the 1920s, but hints of its older history can be found when you walk around the back.

In recent years it has been renovated into 4 wonderfully modern and liveable loft apartments.

It’s long history as the Burnstein Bakery means that many people in St. Joe have sweet memories of this place. It is ready for more delicious experiences.
