House History and Gallery

The house at 508 N. 5th Street was built in the 1860s for Samuel Lockwood, one of the earliest merchants in the city. By 1880, Lockwood sold the house to John Donovan Jr., one of the most prominent figures in St. Joseph in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Donovan is responsible for creating the stockyards and packing house district. Following Donovan’s death in 1913, the house – like most of the big houses on Robidoux Hill – became a boarding house. The initial conversion was done by Mary J. Reid who operated several rooming houses and it was completed by Judge George L. Kellogg.
