House History & Gallery

Built around 1914, the charming American Foursquare house at 2229 Doniphan sits on a lovely lot in a quiet residential neighborhood. This house was the long-time home of the Dreesman family. Herman Joseph Dreesman, a merchant tailor was born in St. Louis on May 5, 1872 to German immigrant parents. He came to St. Joseph right at the turn of the 20th century and opened a tailor shop at 115 N. 8th Street. He married Hannah Marie Roseler, who had immigrated from Germany, and they had four children, two daughters and two sons. Hannah’s occupation is listed as seamstress, and it seems that she helped Herman in his tailoring shop. The family belonged to St. Francis Xavier church and were active in parish activities. Tragically, Herman died in 1929 at the age of 57 of cancer. However, Hannah continued to live in the home with several of her children until 1940.

When the Dreesmans sold the home in the 1940s became a sort of boarding house. Some of the tenants were women whose husbands were serving abroad in the Second World War. One of those was Mary Eleanor Watsabaugh, whose husband was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement for participating I five combat missions in the forward areas of the western Pacific from March 29 to April 13, 1945.

This wonderful house has been undergoing extensive renovation in recent months and is just waiting to see what its next century of life will bring!
