House History & Gallery

In 1895, Jacob Koch opened Wyatt Park Pharmacy in an unassuming brick commercial building at 2613 Lafayette St. He became a fixture in the neighborhood for the next 50 years. Jacob was born in Clinton, Louisiana and graduated from the school of pharmacy at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He then came to St. Joseph to go in to business. His two brothers followed the exact same path and came here as well and opened pharmacies.

Beginning in the mid-1920s, Mr. Koch shared the space with William Warden Shoe repair and Kelly’s Shoe Service.

Jacob married Susie and raised a family of a daughter and two sons at 2506 Olive St. His daughter Agnes attended Sacred Heart Convent school and was a talented amateur musician.

When Jacob retired, he sold his commercial property and it became Mitchell Avenue Cleaners from 1945-1951 and then was the long-time home of Farley Plumbing, Heating, and Roofing.
